All Nippon Airways released the first pictures of the new Star Wards themed aircraft’s interior ahead of its commercial operation on Sunday, October 18, 2015.
ANA signed a five year agreement with LucasArts to promote the Star Wars franchise exclusively (News). Initial routes were announced back in August 2015 with the first flight scheduled for from Tokyo Haneda Airport (HND) to Vancouver International Airport (YVR)(News – August 19, 2015).
The first aircraft with the Star Wars livery will be a Boeing 787-9 that is configured with 215 seats featuring the latest Business Class (48), Premium Economy (21) and Economy (146) in flight product.
The specialty themed aircraft will feature lightsaber-inspired lighting throughout the plane and R2-D2 headset covers in Premium Economy and Economy classes.
It is expected that the airline will celebrate the occasion featuring movie characters. There will also be special on board amenities available to all passengers on the flight.
While this is an exclusive deal between the airline and LucasArts, it will be seen whether the arrangement will increase awareness and traffic towards the Japanese airline. Both might translate to increased booking for the airline as it will have a total of 3 aircrafts with the special livery (two will be used for long haul flights and one for Asian short/medium haul service). It will be important for the airline to keep the momentum by promoting the connection on social media and traditional print/tv outlets.
This opportunity also give way for the airline to do something out of the box such as flying the stars of the movie to key premieres on board the aircrafts.
Perhaps your next flight will be operated by a cabin crew that dresses like Star Wars characters.
